One for the World // GiveWell

Summary of the relationship

One for the World has relied heavily on GiveWell’s research since its inception in 2014, a decision which was made organically by our co-founders (One for the World Criteria Document February 2015, One for the World Criteria Document January 2016, etc.).

From 2018-2022, GiveWell recommended a series of grants to One for the World’s operating costs. They have not done so since 2022, and One for the World’s primary funder is now the Open Philanthropy Project.

Open Philanthropy and GiveWell are separate organizations with separate decision-making structures. However, they do have close ties and the grant officer who manages One for the World grants from Open Philanthropy Project, James Snowden, formerly worked at GiveWell.

Benefits of the relationship

  • GiveWell is a best-in-class charity evaluator with substantially greater resources for research work than OFTW

  • We have aligned missions

  • OFTW receives funds to grow operations and increase impact, and also avoid spending significant time/expenses on fundraising

  • OFTW directs money to GiveWell charities from demographics that are considered ‘hard to reach’

Risks of the relationship

  • OFTW becomes over-reliant on one funding source - to this end, the proportion of our costs secured from GiveWell has decreased year-on-year since 2018

  • OFTW loses opportunities to engage donors or funders because of the limited list of causes

  • Some cause areas that are popular with donors are not featured (e.g. women’s empowerment, climate change)
