One for the World is a movement of students and young professionals that are changing the way our generation gives back. Approximately 10% of the world's population live in extreme poverty, on less than $1.90(USD) per day. However, with more than 1.5 million non-profits in the U.S. alone, it can be difficult to identify which organizations create the most impact. We are here to change that.

One for the World is part of a broader 'effective giving' movement focused on accomplishing as much good as possible per dollar donated. We take the guesswork out of philanthropy by recommending charities that are proven to have the highest ROI.  Our charity recommendations are based on robust research on effectiveness; we leverage industry leading resources (GiveWell) and then add an extra layer of diligence.

We recommend individuals allocate a fixed portion of their income toward effective giving, similar to budgeting for any other major goal or purchase. One for the World pledgers commit to giving at least 1% of their income to our recommended charities for life.

Our Mission

Our mission is to end extreme poverty. We will accomplish this mission by educating students and young professionals about how they can donate to charities that are proven to create the greatest impact.

We recommend 19 specific charities that address a variety of issues that affect the world's poor including hunger / nutrition, water / sanitation, healthcare / infection disease control, infant mortality, agriculture & farming, economic development, and education.

"One for the World is a small, but very important development in the fight against the devastating effects of extreme poverty."

— Charlie Bresler, Ph.D, Executive Director, The Life You Can Save

Our Beginning

One for the World was co-founded by two Wharton MBAs, Kate Epstein and Josh McCann, in 2014. Kate and Josh quickly realized that Wharton classmates were interested in learning about effective giving but lacked the tools to do so. One for the World was formed in response to this unmet need and has spread to 15 other schools since inception including Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Columbia, and Tufts, among others.
